1972 Malibu to Chevelle SS Conversion Project noneck.gif (9175 bytes)

Just when the 72 Chevelle seemed to be nearing it's completion, the motor started making a weird noise. I FINALLY got the car completely together. All the glass was back in, the interior was all in. It was basically done! I took the car for a celebratory jaunt down the road to show my buddy the completed project. He wasn't home so I left. It was a beautiful spring afternoon: about 65*. Great temp to rev up the big block! I spun her up to 5 grand in first gear then power shifted into second. Something just didn't seem right. It had no more nuts after 5 grand. With my cam and intake it should peak around 6 grand. I knew something was wrong. I backed off and heard a knocking in the motor. I babied it home and dumped the oil. It was pretty crusty. The magnet in the oil pan was full of metal as was the oil filter when I cut it open. I figured this was probably due to wiping a lobe off the first cam. I changed the oil and filter and took it out again. (I could no longer hear the knocking while under the hood and revving the engine.) As soon as I hit 2500 RPM, I heard the noise again. Babied it back home again and 3 days later we pulled the motor. I found a couple of rod bearings had started to let go. As of now, I found a steel crank for it and will now completely redo the motor. I'll have the heads redone and ported and put some forged pistons in it. I'm hoping for about 500 HP when she's done. Stay tuned, the project continues!!!!
